Blue Whale Expedition Welcome to the Mingan Island Cetacean Study. Beginning in 1979 the focus of our research was on the rorqual whales, the blue whale in particular. Because the principal objective of the blue whale sessions is to find and study Blue whales wherever they are, these sessions are for those who want the best opportunity to observe blue whales and experience field research. These research sessions provide us with an autonomous, self-sufficient research team, capable of covering a wide area and maximize our field efforts in the St. Lawrence.
Oregon State University Marine Mammal Program The OSU Marine Mammal Program is on the forefront of this work, providing critical information about the habitat and movements of these whales. Between 1993 and 1995, OSU researchers placed satellite tags on blue whales and traced their southbound migration through Mexican waters to a previously-unknown possible winter breeding and calving area 500 miles off the coast of Costa Rica.
